Hard chrome is an electroplated surface finish that is also known as industrial hard chrome, functional chrome, and engineering chrome. When designing machine components, engineers often combine a base metal, or substrate, with a surface finish to achieve the quality, efficiency, and reliability desired in their product. Of the numerous hard coating surface finishes available, industrial hard chrome plating continues to be one of the most popular.
Hard chrome plating demonstrates excellent hardness and lubricity, and is the premier engineering choice to reduce friction, minimize wear and prevent galling. These characteristics are applicable for critical engineering applications, including: machine tool cutting surfaces, cylinder bores, strut rods, crankshafts and hydraulic shafts. The chrome plating process is a method of applying a thin layer of chromium onto a substrate (metal or alloy) through an electroplating procedure.
In simple terms, electroplating is achieved by passing an electric current between two electrodes which are immersed in an electrolyte bath comprising of chromic acid. One of the electrodes will be the substrate which is to be plated. During the flow of electricity between the two electrodes, chromium atoms are deposited in a layer on the electrode to be plated.
How does chrome plating work exactly? It’s essentially an electroplating technique that, like other electroplating techniques, requires an electrical charge. To apply a layer of chromium onto a workpiece or object, a manufacturing company must apply an electrical charge to a tub or container filled with chromium anhydride. The electrical charge triggers a chemical reaction in which the chromium deposits itself onto the surface of the work piece or object.
This is a very effective treatment for a variety of metals/alloys including steel, copper and brass which are used in many modern technical applications. It is commonly used in situations where the component needs to be resistant to corrosion such as hydraulic piston rods, gear shafts, and motorcycle forks used in the automotive sector. It is also ideal for processes that require low-friction surfaces for delicate products like textiles and paper.
